Hear from women in the fishing industry

I’ve been hooked on the BBC’s series of ‘This Fishing Life’ and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s inspiring to follow the lives of men and women working in such a tough environment. I’ve been lucky enough to interview four women who work in the industry, sharing their story in a short film.

The award-winning video features Elaine, Emma, Kerensa and Sam, who gave us an honest snapshot into their busy fishing lives. Through their experiences and challenges, they explain just how rewarding and diverse a career in the fishing industry can be - and that when it comes to family it’s all hands on deck!

About the video production team

The amazing Dr Madeline Gustavsson, lead researcher on the Women in Fisheries project decided to create a video to increase the visibility of women working in fisheries. As video producer, I worked alongside the talented Chris Campkin (Film Maker) and Alex Smalley (Creative Director) to create two powerful videos.

We filmed across Cornwall, taking in sunrises and sunsets as the women were hard at work. Due to travel restrictions, Ryan Blackwood filmed Elaine in Fife and it’s fair to say we were all a bit envious of his ‘out to sea’ experience!

If you’re a researcher thinking about using video to share the real experiences of the people behind your research, I’d love to help you bring their stories to life.
